Closed Positions Summary Sheet
The Closed Positions Summary sheet provides a high-level, strategic overview of your realized investment performance. Unlike individual trade logs, this sheet aggregates data by Root Symbol and Year, allowing you to analyze the total outcome of your investment "campaigns" (e.g., all TSLA shares and related options combined) for a specific fiscal period.
Purpose and How It Works
- Root Symbol Aggregation: The sheet groups all trades sharing the same Root Symbol. This means your performance for a ticker like "TSLA" includes the P&L from physical shares and all associated options contracts (Calls/Puts).
- Yearly Filtering: A dropdown menu allows you to filter the summary by the calendar year the positions were realized.
- Dual-Engine Logic:
- Inventory Metrics: (Volume, Avg Prices) focus strictly on physical Spot holdings (Equity/Crypto) to match your broker records.
- Financial Metrics: (P&L, Cost, FX, Tax) include all strategic activity, including options premiums and currency impacts.
Key Columns
The summary is organized into 12 specialized columns designed for performance and tax reporting.
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Ticker | The Root Symbol of the asset (e.g., TSLA, BTC). |
| Asset Type | Categorizes the primary asset as "Equity" or "Crypto". |
| Total Volume | The absolute quantity of physical shares or coins realized during the year. Options contracts are excluded here to maintain inventory clarity. |
| Avg Open Price | The volume-weighted average price (VWAP) paid to open the physical positions realized this year (in Asset Currency). |
| Avg Close Price | The volume-weighted average price (VWAP) received to close the physical positions (in Asset Currency). |
| Asset P&L | The raw performance of the asset campaign in its native currency. This includes both share price moves and all option premiums collected or paid. |
| Total Cost (b.curr.) | The total opening cost in base currency. This reflects the "Tax Basis". |
| Total Proceeds (b. curr.) | The total proceeds received upon closing the positions, converted to base currency at the time of the trade. |
| FX Impact | The portion of your profit or loss specifically attributed to fluctuations in the exchange rate between your entry and exit. |
| Net P&L | Your final "Bottom Line" in base currency (Total Proceeds - Total Cost). |
| Net ROI | The percentage return on capital utilized for that asset during the year. |
| Total Tax | The total realized tax liability or benefit generated by the asset's activity in the selected year. |
Tips and Best Practices
- Strategic Campaign Analysis: Use the Asset P&L (native currency) vs. Net P&L (base currency) to determine if your gains were driven by your trading skill or simply by favorable currency movements.
- Inventory Reconciliation: The Total Volume column is designed to match your brokerage's 1099-B or annual statement. If you only traded options on a ticker but never owned the stock, this volume will correctly show as zero while your P&L remains accurate.
tip
To see the individual trades that make up a summary row, refer to the Trades sheet and filter by the Ticker and Year close columns.
